Scientific Employee (f/m/d) – Biomedical Data Integration

Center for Molecular Neurobiology Hamburg – Institute for Medical Systems Biology

We are the UKE – the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf [Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf]. A pulsating centre of health in the heart of Hamburg. When you are surrounded by that much energy and when progress sets the pace, no two days are the same. More than 14,100 employees with very different responsibilities are united by the same goal: ensuring health and well-being.

What to expect

  • fulltime: 38,5 hours per week
  • limited for two years
  • Location: Hamburg-Eppendorf

The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) is one of Europe’s most modern clinics. Located close to the city center of Hamburg, the UKE fosters interdisciplinary research bridging medicine, basic and applied biomedical research, and teaching. Medical specialists and research scientists closely collaborate to develop and apply state-of-the-art technology to gain novel insights into human pathology and to provide optimal care for our patients.

The Institute for Medical Systems Biology aims to develop and apply artificial intelligence (Al)-based methods on biomedical data. In order to leverage the most innovative and groundbreaking Al technology in medicine, we have established the UKE Center for Biomedical Artificial Intelligence (bAIome: https://bAIome.org).

Some key projects require the integration of heterogeneous biomedical data from different source systems into a semantic data integration platform. This platform enables researchers to apply state-of-the-art methods (artificial intelligence, machine learning) to clinically relevant questions in order to improve patient care or gain insights into the treatment of various diseases. In this context we are looking for a scientific employee – ‘Biomedical Data Integration’.

Responsibilities

  • Biomedical data integration based on the ‘FAIR’ data principles
  • Design and implementation of data storage and ETL processes
  • Optimization of database modeling and interface concepts
  • Research in the field of data integration platforms and performance optimization
  • Deployment of services and architectures via container-based software solutions
  • implementing IT security policies and data protection aspects

Qualifications

  • MSc in computer science or comparable (i.e. bioinformatics, physics, mathematics)
  • Advanced programming skills in a higher programming language are required
  • Experience with database technologies, ETL processes and semantic concepts is an advantage
  • Experience in the configuration and analysis of networks, system administration and container technologies is an advantage
  • Very good knowledge of English is a prerequisite. Good knowledge of German is a plus.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to learn new concepts and technical skills rapidly
  • Good communication skills with researchers and technical teams in an interdisciplinary environment

What we can offer

  • An innovative, family-friendly working environment right in the middle of Hamburg (day nursery, free child care during the school holidays)
  • An attractive salary measured against industry standards and at the same time the freedom of employment as a scientific employee
  • Opportunity to participate in a wide range of vocational training, continuing and further education courses at the UKE Academy for Education and Careers, as well as a broad spectrum of introductory events
  • An attractive company pension scheme and the use of diverse and multiple award-winning health and illness-prevention offers
