Project coordinator Mathematic modelling chemical exposure assessment

RIVM

Functieomschrijving

Are you a project coordinator with knowledge of mathematic modelling and exposure science? Willing to contribute with multi-disciplinary project teams to solutions for societal questions regarding the risks of chemical substances? Than this vacancy might be interesting for you!

The department

Within the department Consumer and Product Safety [Consumenten en Product Veiligheid] (CPV) we work with about enthusiastic 25 colleagues to deal with questions like: “What are the health effects of chemicals, nanomaterials and microplastics in consumer products and our living environment? What is needed to adequately manage these risks?”. Our multidisciplinary team advices various governments in preventing health problems caused by chemicals of concern (such as PFAS). We participate in (inter)national scientific studies and we represent the Netherlands in European and worldwide consultations. The department is part of the Centre for Safety of Substances and Products [Veiligheid van Stoffen en Producten] (VSP).

Purpose of the position

In the present society a high variety of chemicals is produced and used in consumer products. European and national policy strive for sustainable and circular use of raw materials. Regulations for the safe production and use of chemicals in consumer products are in place. The European chemicals strategy for sustainability aims to change the regulations to better protect citizens and the environment from harmful chemicals. RIVM is regularly asked to advice on the health consequences of the exposure to hazardous chemical substances. In our advice we make use of consumer exposure models, which need to be based on state of the art exposure science.

In this position you coordinate projects aiming to investigate and improve consumer exposure models to chemical substances. With your knowledge and experience in result-oriented project coordination you will lead project teams consisting of experts on mathematic modelling, exposure science and risk assessment. You create an open constructive atmosphere within the team. Together with the team members you shape the project and within the boundaries of the project budget the project delivers scientifically sound results.

Tasks and activities

  • You are responsible for the project coordination of multi-disciplinary research projects aiming to improve the consumer exposure assessment models.
  • You motivate team members and present feedback on their performance.
  • You discuss and present both procedural and content related project reports, taking account of the added value for regulatory risk assessment and chemicals policy.
  • You will develop, maintain and use partnerships and contacts within RIVM and with employees of other (inter) national organizations.

Unique to this job

In this position at the RIVM you will coordinate projects on unique, innovative and challenging research questions based on societal needs. Due to the independent and scientific position of the RIVM, you find yourself between the academic and regulatory framework and you come into contact with the academic world as well as the ministries, enforcement authorities and the European institutions. As the exposure assessments will be used within the risk assessment of chemicals your efforts may have a direct contribution to actual societal questions.
